Whether you are remodeling an existing kitchen or designing a new one, the island or peninsula is often a focal point in your design. It is important that it be well lit so that you can use it for everything from chopping vegetables to eating meals and entertaining. Pendant lights are great for this purpose as they can produce good task lighting and they can also add a touch of style to the space. However, it is important to determine the correct number and positioning of pendants for your space.

The first thing to consider is the type of pendant you are going to use and how you will be using it. If you will be focusing on task lighting then it may be wise to choose a larger pendant with a more spread out light source. On the other hand if you will be using them more for decorative purposes then a smaller pendant with a more focused light may work better. You also need to consider the shape of the pendant. Wider, flatter designs will not encroach as much on the space above your island as more bulbous, heavier styles.

Another factor to consider is the size of your island and peninsula as this will help you to determine the number of pendants you need. For example a long, slender island or peninsula will probably require three pendant lights whereas a short, wide one can be accommodated with just two pendants.

If you are installing a series of pendants over an island it is a good idea to use a formula to ensure that they are evenly spaced. To do this you can simply divide the width of your island in half. For example if you have an 8′ wide island then you will want to have the center of each pendant be 4′ from each end of the island.

This will help you to make sure that your island is properly illuminated and it will create a sense of balance and proportion for your overall design. You can experiment with different numbers of pendants over your island but it is a good idea to stick to this general formula for even spacing as this will help your design to look balanced and well thought out. Using a tape measure or string and helium balloons is a great way to test out how your island will look with various amounts of pendants as this will give you a very close visual representation of what the space will actually look like when it is finished.
